Transcript:
We are heartbroken to have learned this past week that our inaugural president, Lisa Weems has passed away. We say goodbye to our dear friend, colleague, pioneer and family member. The world will long remember her as a legend, a champion for those who had none, a lion of advocacy for Black and Brown interpreters all over the US, and a cornerstone- building up Black Deaf communities all around the world.

Those of us who loved her, and ache with her passing, knew Lisa Weems as Mama Weems, General, Mrs. Lisa, or “yes ma’am” (if you were lucky enough to get her pearls of wisdom). She was a strong yet tender presence in any room.

As we mourn the loss of such an amazing and loving person we celebrate her life and legacy as a trail blazer and a kind soul. She was a wife, mentor, friend, mother to the village, family and confidant. Our Mama Weems will be greatly missed, but leaves behind a legacy of dreams and aspirations for the rest of us to fulfill.
