History:

Myra Coffield (Charlotte's daughter and the founder of the Dr. Coffield Scholarship):

“I would like to take this opportunity to introduce my mother – Dr. Charlotte A. Coffield. While there is much to read about her professional career, I would like to share with you a glimpse of her character. Known as Charlotte in professional circles, but more affectionately called Perry by family and friends, she was a smart, determined, and compassionate woman whose life was defined by service, strength, and kindness.

A trailblazer in her field as a Sign Language Interpreter in the federal government, she upheld the highest professional standards while radiating warmth and generosity. She championed education, civil rights, and inclusion—not only through her work, but also in her community and every aspect of her life. Perry embraced the world and everyone in it, welcoming strangers as friends, encouraging creativity in all forms, and celebrating diversity.

Whether she was advocating for the Deaf community, striking a pose for a photo (or taking one), or dancing around the house while teaching me to sign the lyrics of songs on the radio, she lived with passion and heart. Her legacy is one of deep commitment to education, empowerment, advocacy, and joy.

My mother received many accolades throughout her career, and I am confident that the establishment of this eponymous scholarship to support the education of Black interpreters would be a highlight of which she would be so incredibly proud.”
